The 63rd edition of Pittsburgh’s annual Light Up Night took place on Saturday, once again turning the city into a holiday extravaganza. The city’s downtown has been painstakingly decorated with thousands of lights and decorations among the hustle and bustle of the season, ready to welcome locals and visitors to enjoy the joyous weekend. According to CBS News Pittsburgh, Jeremy Waldrup of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership stated, “I’m encouraging you right now to find that inner elf and get ready because we have the best holiday season lineup ever for you this year.”
Pittsburgh’s 109th official city tree, a 40-foot blue spruce, was lit during the event’s opening ceremony, which took place at the City-County Building at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Jax Hunyady, a 9-year-old brain cancer survivor, was chosen to light the tree at PPG Place at 6 p.m. as part of the American Cancer Society Tribute of Light Celebration, making him a noteworthy participant this year.
Along with the lights and trees, there were live performances on a number of music stages. The Xfinity Riverfront Stage featured alt-rock group The Fray as the main act.The whole itinerary, including ceremonies, tree lighting, and a breakdown of the musical acts, was provided by WTAE. Inspired by Indigenous cultures of Latin and Central America, a dramatic light performance called “The Three Sisters: Lighting of the Sister Bridges” added a new element to the celebrations. It began at 8 p.m. and lighted the bridges of Rachel Carson, Andy Warhol, and Roberto Clemente.
On the more participatory front, the Peoples Gas Holiday Market, which included local stores like Love, Pittsburgh, and Songbird Artistry, opened early. Holiday greetings and pictures are welcome at Santa’s House, where guests can donate to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. In the meantime, skaters were invited to glide on the ice rink at PPG Place beneath the holiday tree.
The “Supersized Zambelli Finale” fireworks, which were streamed live for those enjoying from a distance and could be seen from downtown, marked the end of the evening at 9:30 p.m.
