Plainville Resident Accused of Arson in Apartment Complex Fire, Over Twenty Displaced

An apartment complex on Messenger Street in Plainville was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning, forcing more than twenty residents to evacuate. According to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the fire started at around 5:15 AM and was put out by the Plainville Fire Department with assistance from neighboring municipalities. The impact was felt throughout the building, with smoke and heat inflicting severe damage, even though the flames were mostly restricted to one apartment.

Plainville Fire Department Chief Robert E. Skinner emphasized the importance of a secondary egress that was recently put in on the upper floors, greatly enhancing the evacuation procedure. Thankfully, no serious injuries were recorded, however some people were seen by doctors for smoke inhalation, and one pet was saved and treated.

After examining the site, speaking with witnesses, and gathering more evidence, detectives from the Plainville Police Department, the Plainville Fire Department, and State Police fire investigators affiliated with the State Fire Marshal’s office have concluded the fire was purposeful. The incident’s suspected perpetrator has been named as Heather A. MacKinnon, 61.

Later, MacKinnon was found and taken into custody by the Plainville Police Department in North Attleborough. She is currently being charged with disorderly behavior, malicious destruction of property, and arson of a house. The Wrentham District Court has set an arraignment; specifics will be provided later.
