Police release name of suspect, charges, after Rhode Island man shot pointing replica gun at himself, others

PAWTUCKET, RI – The Pawtucket Police Department provided an update on the officer involved shooting incident which occurred on Sunday in the vicinity of Broad Street and Goff Avenue.

According to Detective Sergeant Theodore Georgitsis, the Pawtucket Police Department responded to a report of a man, later identified as Sebastian Yidana, with a gun pointing it at himself and others. Pawtucket Police Officer Thomas Letourneau engaged Yidana, while in possession of the firearm, and shots were fired. The suspect was struck once in the shoulder.

The officers on scene rendered aid to the suspect and he was subsequently taken to an area hospital by Pawtucket Rescue for the non-life-threatening injury to his shoulder.

During the initial investigation, officers determined that the suspect’s firearm was a plastic replica of a rifle.

Yidana was charged with Felony Assault with a Device Similar to a Firearm and Disorderly Conduct for an incident that occurred on Saturday June 7th. He was also charged with Felony Assault with a Device Similar to a Firearm and Disorderly Conduct related to his actions on Sunday.

The investigation is ongoing in coordination with the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office and the Rhode Island State Police.
