Poll: What’s the Right Amount to Tip for Detroit Restaurant Delivery, Takeout, and Dine in Service?

poll-whats-the-right-amount-to-tip-for-detroit-restaurant-delivery-takeout-and-dine-in-service

The restaurant tipping system is controversial to say the least. Aside from tipping the right amount of tips for various facilities, many people in and outside the hospitality industry believe that the minimum wage shouldn’t exist at all. These individuals cite the historical evidence that tipping was introduced in the United States after the Civil War to avoid paying unskilled workers, many of whom were immigrants and former slaves. Today, data shows that tipping continues to fuel racism, sexism, harassment and exploitation in the service industry. Some restaurants have tried to scrap the practice in recent years but have found it extremely difficult to get tips out of their culture, also because many workers in the industry benefit from the practice. Now, in the midst of a pandemic and recession, it’s a habit that is returning to biting in a very real way.

Typically, people tip 20 percent on a bill of any size, although the rules may vary slightly depending on your setting. With restaurants, bars, and their service staff now open in tougher, riskier conditions, with higher operating costs and more unpredictable business, some people – including this publication – have advocated tipping service staff more generously. However, with fewer customers seated and fewer working hours available, Marketplace recently reported that the tips are not available.

In the spring, Eater Detroit conducted a survey to determine whether customers are comfortable eating out during a pandemic. Among the questions asked, respondents were asked how changes to the service (e.g. servers with masks or restaurants serving food on disposable plates) would affect service staff tips during the pandemic. According to our survey, around 36 percent of respondents said they would continue to tip the same they may have had before the pandemic, while around 60.3 percent (more than 1,200 respondents) said they would tip more than before the pandemic.

Now that the US has been in this new world of food for six months, Eater Detroit wants to know: What exactly is the new tip normal in Detroit? Are Customers Really Exceeding Their Tips Before The Pandemic? What does a tip mean when it comes to internal delivery drivers and gig employees with third-party delivery apps? Take the polls below. They close on Sunday, September 27th at 11:59 p.m. EST.

And restaurant workers, Eater wants to hear from you too: When you go back to work, what was it like? Are the tips better, worse or the same? Write us an email at [email protected]
