Prison Inmate at Stillwater Gets Additional 15 Years for Meth Distribution Scheme with Former Guard

An inmate at Stillwater prison has been slapped with a 15-year sentence for a methamphetamine distribution conspiracy that involved a corrections officer at the Minnesota facility. Axel Rene Kramer, already serving time for second-degree murder, now faces an extended stay behind bars, having been sentenced to an additional 180 months by U.S. District Judge Eric C. Tostrud, as reported by theU.S. Attorney’s Office.

Kramer, 37, conspired with Faith Rose Gratz, a 26-year-old former guard at the facility. Their scheme involved Kramer obtaining meth from outside sources and Gratz using her position to smuggle it inside. Court documents reveal that Kramer coordinated the pickup of drug packages which Gratz would then collect and bring into the prison, a crime she repeated about six times.

Gratz didn t just stop at drugs she also provided Kramer with multiple cell phones, which he used to manage his illicit operation from the inside. The two exchanged “hundreds of text messages,” not only about the conspiracy but also detailing their romantic entanglement. Furthermore, Gratz kept Kramer in the loop about impending cell searches.

The investigation that brought the duo down was a joint effort by the Bayport Police Department, the Minnesota Department of Corrections, and the FBI. According to theJustice Department release, Gratz has since been sentenced to 27 months in prison, which will be followed by two years of supervised release for her role in the conspiracy. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Harry M. Jacobs and Matthew D. Evans.
