Progreso CBP Officers Intercept 35 Pounds of Cocaine Valued at $468K at International Bridge

Customs and Border Protection officers at Progreso’s border crossing had quite the haul earlier this month, uncovering a hefty 35 pounds of cocaine stashed in a 2013 Dodge. According to a recentCBP news release, the illegal drugs found during a detailed secondary inspection are said to be worth around $468,302 on the street.

The discovery went down last Monday at the Progreso International Bridge when an alert CBP officer waved the vehicle into a secondary inspection area where things got serious; they used advanced non-intrusive technology and their team of canines to get a closer look, and that s when they hit the jackpot, fishing out 14 hidden packages of cocaine amidst the car’s innards. Port Director Walter Weaver lauded the efforts, saying, “Our frontline officers continue to work diligently to safeguard our communities through narcotic interdiction coupled with the effective use of technology,” in a statement made by theCBP News.

Efforts like these at ports of entry are critical to stemming the tide of narcotics that attempt to snake their way into U.S. streets, and officials seem keen to emphasize their role in regional safety. Following protocol, the narcotics and vehicle were seized, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) picked up the baton to begin a criminal investigation into the origins and intended destination of the drugs.

The bust is a win for border security, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by CBP officers. Their daily efforts reveal the constant attempts by drug trafficking organizations to smuggle contraband across the border. These officers act as sentinels, helping keep communities ahead of the ever-present flow of drugs, said an HSI official in aCBP news releasefollowing the seizure.
