reported that the fire started around 2:15 p.m. at 105 Marble St. According to a statement from Chief Matthew Grafton, firefighters rescued one resident using a ladder from Ladder 1, while another managed to exit the building independently, albeit with burn injuries.

The distressed calls of residents to 911 revealed the urgency, with one reporting the impossibility of escape through dense smoke and heat. Upon firefighters’ arrival, they not only extinguished the flames but also conducted a thorough search on the third floor with help from Winchester fire teams to make sure no one else was trapped. The injured resident was taken to a nearby hospital by Armstrong Ambulance service for treatment of their burns.

The fire, contained within the unit where it ignited, was under control by approximately 2:30 p.m. However, the mishap left significant smoke damage to the entire third floor and consequential water damage to the floors below. As a result, 14 residents from 11 different units within the complex are now being aided by the American Red Cross of Massachusetts in the wake of their displacement.

Stoneham’s firefighters received support from surrounding communities including Winchester, Wakefield, Melrose, Woburn, and Reading, with others such as Saugus, Medford, and Malden providing station coverage. Also responding to the emergency were Stoneham’s Police, Electrical Inspector, Building Inspector, and the Board of Health. Chief Grafton praised the collaborative response, stating, “Everything was executed precisely and efficiently, from rescuing a resident to the 911 dispatchers who took the calls,” as noted by the
