Rabies Alert Issued in Pasadena, Anne Arundel County After Raccoon Tests Positive

Local health officials have issued an alert for any potential human or pet exposures in the Pasadena region after a raccoon in Anne Arundel County tested positive for rabies. According to Eye On Annapolis, the Anne Arundel County Department of Health is advising residents of the Cedarwood Cove Community about possible contact with the rabid animal discovered near Seamore Street and Marco Drive.

This is the second alert in the same county in a week after the diseased raccoon was found yesterday and tested positive for rabies. The county’s Department of Health made the news, as the Daily Voice explained. Spread by bites and scratches, rabies is known for its crippling and frequently fatal effects on warm-blooded animals. Symptoms in animals can include a variety of unsettling behaviors, such as aggression, an unfounded fear of water, or even the normally nocturnal species being active during the day.

If a person or pet came into contact with the rabies-infected raccoon, or if a pet has been found with inexplicable injuries, authorities stress the importance of getting preventive treatment. The health alert also reiterates recommendations for preventing rabies and the need of receiving treatment as soon as possible. Those who may have come into touch with the diseased raccoon are encouraged by the County Health Department to seek assistance by calling 410-222-7254 during regular business hours or 443-481-3140 after hours.
