Race Car Test Track Accident in Michigan Families Sue Over Children's Injuries

In a race car accident at a test track in Michigan, two kids suffered serious injuries. The family are now suing numerous times and demanding justice.

Ford Motor Company, the owner of the car, and Continental Automotive Systems Inc., the owner of the test track, are the targets of lawsuits.

The Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program, the organization that organized the summer program, and Linus Gugino, the driver of the vehicle, are also being sued by the families.

On July 17, 2023, a school excursion to the Auburn Hill test track resulted in the terrible crash. According to the lawsuit, the race car driver intentionally lost control of the vehicle in order to heighten the excitement of the display.

The automobile struck the railing and children, critically wounding two of them, ages eight and ten, according to cellphone footage.

The father of Elijah Gibson, who was injured in the collision, Vincent Gibson, said, “It was absolutely hands down, the worst moment of my life.” On a field trip organized by a STEM summer program, the second grader and his father visited the test track.

“To show them a good time, to show them what was possible, to show them what their future could look like. And their futures were almost taken from them,” Gibson stated.

Elijah sustained fractures to his legs and skull in addition to a severe brain injury. He needed to have several procedures.

Lavell McGee, age ten, was also seriously injured in the collision to his head.

Jonathan Marko, the lawyer for both families, said, “These kids went from being top of their class overachievers, to be able to get into this program and to be future engineers, to struggling with some of the most basic things.”

According to Marko, the collision was completely avoidable and unfortunate.

“On the first pass, he started to lose control directly towards the kids. Then they had him do it again, go even faster, and either their stability control system did not work, or they intentionally turned it off,” he stated.

According to Marko, the vehicle in question was a Ford prototype sports car on loan called the Mustang Dark Horse.

“The predictable happened. When you take a high-speed, prototype race car, and you race it right next to little kids. And you have your driver lose control on purpose, to make it exciting. Something bad is going to happen. And the worst imaginable nightmare for these families and these children happened,” he stated.

Marko stated that the children shouldn’t have been that close to the racetrack and that the driver lacked qualifications.

“They won’t even let you do this at NASCAR. I go to a NASCAR show, or we go to the Grand Prix at downtown Detroit, they’ve got fences up They won’t even let me as an adult come anywhere near close.”
