In a significant expansion of its flight offerings, Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is set to usher in nonstop flights to Calgary, Canada courtesy of WestJet, with the service scheduled to commence on June 9, 2025. As reported by theNews & Observer, the seasonal flights are aimed at enabling Triangle area travelers bound for western Canada to enjoy a direct route and connect to other destinations through WestJet’s network.

Michael Landguth, who holds the position of president and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority, articulated both excitement and the benefits of the new service, stating “This new seasonal service offers Triangle travelers convenient opportunities to visit the Rockies in Western Canada and easily connect to WestJet s comprehensive network of Canadian and international destinations,” in a statement obtained byCBS 17. The proposed route intends to facilitate travel three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until October 13, travelers are set to gain from this service by accessing a broader array of global destinations, which now includes 40 within Canada and nine spanning continents such as Europe and Asia.

WestJet’s entry into RDU represents a notable addition, being the second airline in a week to announce beginnings at the airport following Bermud Air’s decision to operate routes to Bermuda as detailed by theNews & Observer. This expansion has set a new record for RDU, now offering travelers 11 international nonstop flight options, spanning continents and leveraging the increasing network breadth provided by diverse airlines.

Additionally, enhancing the travel experience, Calgary International Airport is distinguished as a preclearance facility, allowing U.S-bound travelers to undergo customs and immigration inspections prior to departure, John Weatherill of WestJet highlighted the efficiency of the Calgary hub for business and leisure passengers alike, describing the new route as “pivotal” for guests across the border, “Whether traveling for business or leisure, we are confident this new route will be pivotal for our guests on both sides of the border this summer,” he toldCBS 17.
