DDN – An unusual and powerful winter storm has brought the Southern United States to a halt, covering cities such as Houston and New Orleans with a thick layer of snow and ice.

The storm, which lasted from Texas to Florida, produced extensive disruptions, including school and business closures, dangerous travel conditions, and, unfortunately, at least nine deaths.

States of emergency have been proclaimed in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi in response to the region’s historic snowfall. Roads that were usually busy with traffic were strangely silent, replaced with vistas of snow-covered beaches and inhabitants marveling at the new winter paradise.

The storm produced record-breaking snowfall in various regions. New Orleans, which rarely gets snow, received 5 inches, the most since at least 1948. Parts of Louisiana received up to 10.5 inches, approaching the state’s record. Snow fell in Pensacola, Florida, for the first time since 2014.

The storm worsened near the Gulf Coast, causing the National Weather Service to issue its first blizzard warning for the area. Blizzard conditions prevailed in southwestern Louisiana and southeastern Texas, with heavy winds and poor visibility.

The storm caused severe disruptions in daily life, with schools and businesses closed throughout the impacted area. Over 2,000 flights were canceled, and passengers faced extensive delays.

Tragically, the storm has claimed the lives of at least nine people, five of whom died in a wreck near Batesville, Texas.

Despite the hurdles, many folks took advantage of the uncommon opportunity to see snow in the South. Houston, which looked like a “ghost town” early Tuesday, saw people go out later in the day to appreciate the unique scene. Some people had never seen snow before, making it an unforgettable experience.

As the hurricane advances eastward, attention turns to recovery activities. The region is anticipated to encounter continued transport disruptions and hardships in the coming days as it recovers from the historic snowfall. Authorities are advising locals to be cautious and avoid unnecessary travel while the cleanup process proceeds.
