The Ottawa Senators defeated the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 on Thursday night thanks to a goal from Josh Norris with 41.6 seconds left.
The Senators, who had given up at least three goals in each of their previous nine games, had Linus Ullmark stop 19 shots.
Despite dominating play for extended periods, Ottawa (10-12-2) found it difficult to defeat Detroit’s (10-11-4) Ville Husso, who recorded 30 saves.
At 12:14 of the first period, Norris, a native of Michigan, grabbed his own rebound and sent it past a sprawled Husso to give the Senators the lead.
At 6:15 in the third, Detroit took a 4-on-3 lead and knotted the score. Alex DeBrincat scored his 11th goal of the season after catching Ullmark in motion.
Even though they went 0 for 5 on the power play, Ottawa managed to win this one.
Drake Batherson’s power-play goal gave the Senators the appearance of a 2-0 lead in the second half, but the Red Wings prevailed in their replay challenge for offside.
The second period ended without a scoring as Ottawa outshot the Red Wings 13–4.
On Saturday night, the Red Wings will host the Colorado Avalanche.
Senators: On Saturday night, host the Nashville Predators.
