Red Wings fall short, lose 5-4 to New Jersey Devils

In a 5-4 victory over the Red Wings on Friday, the New Jersey Devils capitalized on Detroit’s NHL-worst penalty kill thanks to power plays from Dougie Hamilton, Timo Meier, and Jack Hughes.

With the man advantage, New Jersey won three out of four games. Detroit has killed 39 of 65 penalties, which is a league-low 60%.

The Devils, who have won four of five games, also had goals from Nico Hischier and Stefan Noesen. The Red Wings, who had won their last two games, had goals from Tyler Motte, Justin Holl, Lucas Raymond, and Vladimir Tarasenko.

Cam Talbot of the Red Wings and Jacob Markstrom of the Devils both recorded 25 saves.

Devils: In their last six away games, New Jersey has a 5-1 record. In the last three games for New Jersey, Hischier has scored four goals. In the last five games, Hamilton has scored three goals. The Devils have scored 36 goals in the second period, which is an NHL record.

Talbot participated in his 500th NHL game with the Red Wings. Motte and Holl scored their first goals for the Red Wings in the season. G Alex Lyon and RW Patrick Kane were unable to play due to upper-body injuries.

Hamilton’s goal on a power play late in the first period put Detroit ahead 2-0. The goalkeeper interference challenge by the Red Wings was unsuccessful. Meier tied the score at 2-2 with a goal on the subsequent power play from the bench penalty given to Detroit for the failed challenge.

For the fifth straight game, Raymond scored the goal. Last season, he also had a five-game goal streak. Over the previous 16 years, Raymond is the only Detroit player to score in five straight games. The last Red Wings player to do so was Johan Franzen during the 2007–08 campaign.
