The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Thursday night thanks to a career-high four goals from Scott Laughton, who ended a goal drought.
Laughton became the first Flyers player to score four goals since John LeClair in 2002 and recorded his second career hat trick after only scoring once in his previous 25 games.
Laughton scored a breakaway goal on a slap shot from the left circle to start the second period. He got two empty-net goals and added a short-handed goal in the third after tipping a pass from Travis Konecny.
Aleksei Kolosov won his fourth game of the season with 25 saves.
Detroit’s first goal of the season came late from Ben Chiarot. Six out of seven games have been lost by the Red Wings.
Red Wings: When the game was 0-0, Cam Talbot produced multiple highlight reel stops in an attempt to keep the Red Wings in the match. He stoned Sean Couturier on a breakaway, made a sliding pad stop on Joel Farabee, and made a sprawling glove save on Matvei Michkov in three minutes. A “Michigan” wraparound play later in the period saw Michkov pick up the puck on his blade behind the net and attempt to tuck it in the top corner of the net, but Talbot stopped him.
Flyers: Konecny extended his scoring run to four games with two assists.
During Detroit’s power play at the beginning of the third period, Travis Sanheim stopped Vladimir Tarasenko’s shot attempt, which set up Konecny and Laughton for a 2-on-1 breakaway that resulted in Laughton’s second goal.
Laughton scored his 100th goal in the NHL with his second goal.
On Saturday, Detroit will host Toronto. On Saturday, Philadelphia will travel to Minnesota.
