Red Wings snap 5-game losing streak with shootout win over Sabres

The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Buffalo Sabres 6-5 in a shootout on Monday night, ending a five-game losing streak with two goals from Andrew Copp.

After falling behind 5-3, Buffalo’s comeback was initiated at 10:27 of the third period by Copp’s second goal. Five minutes later, defenseman Moritz Seider knotted the score. To complete the triumph, Dylan Larkin scored the game-winning goal in the shootout.

In his NHL debut, Sebastian Cossa of Detroit got a win after making 12 stops in Ville Husso’s place. After Husso made four saves on seven shots in the first period, he came on at the beginning of the second.

The Red Wings also had goals from Lucas Raymond and Alex DeBrincat.

The Sabres, who are winless in seven games in a row, scored two goals and an assist from Jason Zucker (0-5-2). In his first start since November 30, James Reimer recorded 26 saves. The Sabres’ goals came from Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Tage Thompson, and Zach Benson.

Sabres: After making his NHL comeback on November 27, Thompson scored his 15th goal of the season, placing him in the top 10. In his last four games, he has scored four goals.

Red Wings: Detroit’s first multi-goal third-period comeback of the season snapped their losing run. Last season, the Red Wings achieved that accomplishment three times.

At 2:57 of overtime, Ryan McLeod, a forward for the Sabres, had Cossa beat but missed the post with a breakaway effort.

Raymond passed Peter Forsberg and equaled Gabriel Landeskog for fourth-most assists by a Swedish player before turning 23 with his 122nd assist on Seider’s game-winning goal.
