Redwood City in Turmoil: Man Critically Wounded, Teen Suspected in Shooting and Robbery Incidents

On September 25, the Redwood City Police Department was called to a late-night shooting at the intersection of Jackson Avenue and Adams Street. According to Hoodline, the adult male victim, who is currently in critical but stable condition, was discovered with a gunshot wound and taken to a neighboring hospital for treatment.

Payton Russi, an 18-year-old resident of Redwood City, was taken into custody as the suspected gunman in connection with the investigation. The weapon used in the incident hasn’t been located, though. The Redwood City Police conducted additional investigations, which showed that more people were involved in the pre-shooting activity. According to the Redwood City Police Department, one of the suspects is a child who attends McKinley Institute of Technology and was subsequently taken into custody for a separate strong-arm robbery of another student there on October 10.

Yesterday, authorities carried out a search warrant and named the child as a suspect in the ongoing sequence of incidents. Detectives at McKinley Institute of Technology approached the person, anticipating the need to avoid confrontation. Detectives used a control hold for safe detention after the child became combative when requested to take off his bag. The detective’s body-worn cameras captured this.

The young person is presently at the San Mateo County Youth Services Center after being apprehended for the crime. Law enforcement continues to focus on the link between the heist and the previous shooting. Anyone with information is encouraged to come forward and call the Redwood City Police Department’s non-emergency line at 650-780-7100.
