Repeat DUI Offender with Manslaughter Conviction Sentenced to 15 Years for Illegal Re-entry into U.S.

A Mexican man was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for illegal re-entry into the United States after having previous convictions for driving under the influence, including one that resulted in death. Guadalupe Gerardo Reyes-Gonzalez was sentenced after confessing to the crime earlier this year. U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Leigha Simonton stated that U.S. District Judge Ada Brown had imposed his sentence.

Reyes-Gonzalez was found guilty of intoxication manslaughter in 1997 after his car collided with a pedestrian, causing the pedestrian to suffer fatal head injuries. His blood alcohol level was 0.15, which is almost twice the legal limit. After being deported after serving an eight-year sentence, Reyes-Gonzalez repeatedly entered the country illegally. In 2021, he was briefly sentenced to three days in jail for his most recent drunk driving episode.

Referencing Reyes-Gonzalez’s prior transgressions, Judge Brown responded to the sentencing by stating his resolve to ensure public safety. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Judge Brown noted at the hearing that “the defendant had already killed one U.S. citizen,” emphasizing the seriousness of his prior acts and the necessity of a harsh sentencing.

Reyes-Gonzalez was most recently arrested during an investigation by U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement in collaboration with the Mesquite Police Department. The case’s prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Walt Junker. The court decided to impose a longer jail sentence than normal for such offenses due in large part to Reyes-Gonzalez’s criminal background and his record of several unlawful reentry after deportations.

Erin Dooley, Press Officer for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Texas, gave additional information about the case. The finality of Reyes-Gonzalez’s legal processes is further reinforced by the fact that information about the incident and the ensuing sentencing is available on the U.S. Attorney’s Office website.
