Repeat Offender Gets Mandatory Life Sentence in Orange County for Kidnapping and Robbery

A 27-year-old repeat criminal named Richard Warren was given a life sentence by an Orange County jury. Following an altercation with an Uber driver earlier this year, Warren was found guilty on several offenses, including Robbery with a Firearm, Carjacking with a Firearm, and Kidnapping with Intent to Inflict Harm/Terror with a Firearm.

When Warren called an Uber on July 20, the worrying events started. He pointed a gun at the driver shortly after he was picked up, dragged him throughout Orange County, and finally ordered him to get into the trunk at an auto parts store. At a crossroads in the 8200 block of Universal Boulevard, the driver was subsequently instructed to disrobe before being instructed to get out of the car, according to a statement from the State Attorney’s Office. The victim called the police after escaping, which resulted in Warren’s apprehension at a Kissimmee Walmart.

Warren was convicted of violating his probation from prior convictions in addition to these other counts. Remarkably, he had been freed from jail only a year prior to this most recent offense, having served nine years for crimes relating to a 2013 home invasion. The Orange County State Attorney’s Office statement also clarified that if an offender commits a serious felony within three years of being released from prison, they will face harsher punishments as a prison release reoffender under Florida law.

Warren, a serial offender, received a life sentence with an extra 40 years for violating probation. The case was handled by an assistant state attorney from the Violent Crimes Unit.
