Wisconsin Cities With the Largest Black Population For 2024

We continue to have confidence in the reliability of data, particularly from the Census. We went there to get information about the race in Wisconsin. The most recent data available is from the 2018-2022 American Community Survey conducted by the US Census. We specifically examined table B03002, which provides information on Hispanic or Latino origin by race. These are the names of the categories defined by the Census:

  • Hispanic or Latino
  • White alone*
  • Black or African American alone*
  • American Indian and Alaska Native alone*
  • Asian alone*
  • Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone*
  • Some other race alone*
  • Two or more races*

The specific column we were interested in was the count of individuals who identified themselves as Black or African American. We only looked at cities in Wisconsin that have a population of more than 5,000 people, excluding CDPs. We were left with 137 cities. We calculated the percentage of residents who identify as Black or African American. The percentages range from 38.1% to 0.0%.

Finally, we determined the ranking of each city by considering the percentage of the Black population. A higher score indicates a higher proportion of Black residents, while a lower score indicates a lower proportion. Milwaukee was the city with the highest number of Black residents, while Hobart had the lowest number of African American residents.
