In Rockdale County, the air is still thick with more than just the remnant fumes of September’s Biolab chemical fire; it’s filled with the palpable discontent of residents demanding the revocation of the company’s business license. Following a partial reopening of the facility earlier this month, a fire on September 29 that released chemicals into the air for days has been a catalyst for a new petition, this time led by Paul Glaze of the Shut Down BioLab Coalition. “Are pool cleaning supplies really worth this level of like millions and millions of dollars lost?” Glaze questioned in a statement obtained byFOX5 Atlanta.
Despite the clearance from authorities for a partial resumption of operations on November 4, many locals bear the lasting impact of the incident. Chris Floyd, an auto body shop owner, expressed his frustration toWSB-TV, stating, “Could not come to work. People had their car over here and could get them out. Breathing the chemicals. I myself had to go down to Emory after breathing the chemicals.” Floyd, clearly still experiencing the aftermath of the fire, supports the petition wholeheartedly, reflecting a shared sentiment among those affected.
Community groups have rallied around the language in the county’s code of ordinances, which some interpret as a legal foothold for their demands. “Putting this new petition out there is actually more about educating the community to let them know that actually we know there’s a lawsuit. We know there’s all this discussion, but it’s very simple. The law already requires the commission to do this,” explained Glaze, as reported byFOX5 Atlanta.
Keyanna Jones Moore of the Sierra Club Georgia reinforced this stance in an interview withWSB-TV, underscoring their alignment with county ordinances.
While a lawsuit by the county is currently pending without a set court date, the recent petition seems to embody a community’s efforts to expedite the process. Paul Gaze of Georgia Conservation Voters noted the urgency of the matter, tellingWSB-TV, “We have already had three strikes. so why would we go through this again?” The consolidated legal action against Biolab, as per the law firm Morgan & Morgan countries to represent the collective voice for residents still reeling from BioLab’s chemical misadventures.
