RTA Seeks Public Feedback on $2.46 Billion Transportation Plan for Tucson’s Future

In an effort to involve Tucson metro residents in the discussion about their commutes and neighborhood connectivity, the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) is taking action. Through a series of open homes, they have thrown open the carpet—not in a spectacular, fantastical way, but with a simple appeal for public participation. The purpose of these meetings is to get input on a 20-year, $2.46 billion plan to modernize regional transportation.

The draft plan, which was approved by the RTA Board on September 26, calls for a wide range of improvements, including improvements to transit, safety improvements that meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, active transportation, arterial network reconstruction, environmental considerations, and roadway corridor projects. Supported by a half-cent excise fee approved by Pima County voters back in 2006, these proposed upgrades are not merely showpieces; they represent the next steps in a long-term plan to bring Tucson’s transit into the twenty-first century.

According to a statement from Pima County officials, those who would like to contribute can mark November and December on their calendars. The open houses provide people a chance to voice their opinions and give the RTA an opportunity to clarify specifics about the massive project. No pomp or circumstance is spoken; only the transportation industry and the practical aspects of what it means to go forward are discussed.

The RTA provides additional information online at RTAnext.com for people who are unable to attend open houses. Fact sheets, frequently asked questions, and information on the plan development process are available there. The RTA has been discreetly working on projects totaling $1.6 billion since voters adopted their 20-year plan, with an emphasis on enhancing the region’s economy, safety, mobility, and environment.
