Sacramento Braces for Winter Weather with Howling Winds Rain and Snow Sweeping Through the Region

Sacramento is set to face another round of winter weather with rain, snow, and strong winds. After a Winter Weather Advisory ended at 10 p.m. yesterday, theNational Weather Servicepredicts a new system will arrive tomorrow into Monday. Mountain highways like Highway 88 and Highway 108 may still require chain controls after recent snow showers moved east.

The day will start chilly, with a 30% to 55% chance of temperatures dropping below 35 F in sheltered valley areas, though northerly winds may keep it slightly warmer. Expect gusts of 20 to 30 mph, increasing to 35 mph in the Delta, with daytime highs ranging from the low to upper 50s.

The system arriving tomorrow is weaker and fast-moving, bringing light rain tomorrow evening into early Monday and a light dusting of snow above 5500 feet. While travel disruptions tomorrow night are expected to be minor, caution is advised. After Monday’s snow showers, theNational Weather Serviceforecasts a dry period as high pressure returns to California.

A new system will bring rain and snow from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, mainly affecting the northern Coastal Range and southern Cascades. Precipitation will be lighter south of I-80, but uncertainty remains for the weekend. The NWS forecasts the best chance for rain on Friday, with a 45% to 70% chance of up to a quarter inch. Saturday’s forecast is still unclear.

Pilots can expect VFR conditions in Interior Northern California over the next 24 hours. Strong north winds will gust from 20 to 30 MPH, especially across the Delta, until they ease by 00z tomorrow. The skies will be clear, but winds will be strong.
