Sacramento City Council to Vote on Tougher Measures Against Sideshow Events

With a vote scheduled for today on legislation that would impose harsher penalties for both participants and spectators, the City Council is prepared to take action as sideshows continue to cause disruptions on Sacramento’s streets. These unlawful sideshow activities, which obstruct intersections and entail risky vehicle maneuvers, have turned into a public annoyance, according to a KCRA report. Frequently, the overly enthusiastic crowd or innocent bystanders caught in the chaos suffer injury.

In order to curb street takeovers, Council Member Lisa Kaplan has proposed the Sideshow Ordinance Amendments. City officials stress that Sacramento streets are not intended for risky racing activities, and the proposal targets drivers, spectators, and event planners.

Giving law enforcement cutting-edge equipment to implement the suggested crackdown is another of Kaplan’s ideas. “It s time that we do more to ensure the safety of our communities and use all available tools to crack down on sideshows, their promoters and the spectators,” Kaplan toldFOX40. Among other technology, the instruments include the employment of drones and license plate readers.

Although earlier attempts to pass an ordinance prohibiting sideshows failed, local legislation has gained new impetus when Governor Newsom recently signed new legislation specifically targeting these events. Due to the high level of community interest and concern, the council meeting has been scheduled for 5 p.m., and the public is welcome to attend in person at the City Hall Complex, which is located at 915 I Street, Sacramento.
