Sacramento Fire Department Alerts Citizens Post Two Kitchen Fires, Emphasizes Safety During Holidays

Last night, food left on a stove caused a fire at a Sacramento home, forcing six people—five of them children—to evacuate due to a cooking accident. According to KCRA, crews were called shortly after 5 p.m. to react to the post-haste incident on the 1500 block of Fulton Avenue. Thankfully, no one was hurt since the house has smoke alarms and a functional fire extinguisher, which Sac Metro Fire requires be checked every month. They also emphasized how crucial it is to have an escape plan prepared and practiced.

The recurrent incident on Fulton Avenue happened Tuesday night when Sac Metro Fire personnel were able to swiftly put out a stove-top fire in an apartment, warning residents to be especially watchful during the holidays, when the likelihood of kitchen fires rises dramatically. The incident, which was reported at 5:34 p.m., was contained to the kitchen area and was quickly extinguished without causing any injuries, according to a press statement that PS News was able to get.

“Kitchen fires are the #1 cause of house fires,” according to Battalion Chief Parker Wilbourn, who emphasized the need of planning and prevention on PS News. He also suggested keeping a three-foot distance from any cooking appliances, paying close attention to what you’re cooking at all times, and placing a fire extinguisher close by but not next to any appliances that may make it difficult to use them if necessary. According to Wilbourn’s fire safety rules, smothering grease fires with a pan lid rather than water could worsen the problem by spreading the flames.

The remarks made by Sac Metro Fire further the conversation by serving as a reminder to the community of the need of being proactive in the kitchen. In order to always have a workable escape plan in case of emergencies, it was also suggested that house escape plans be practiced on a regular basis.
