To increase the efficacy of emergency response, the Sacramento Police Department and the Sacramento Fire Department have launched the Drone First Responder (DFR) Trial Program. Remotely controlled drones started responding to service requests in Del Paso Heights on November 20. They operated between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, and they covered a two-mile radius from their base station.
The program’s role is vital given the need to improve resource management and public safety measures. According to a post on the Sacramento City Express, the drones help verify situational information, conduct area searches, and provide critical surveillance before human responders arrive.
Sacramento Police Sgt. Dan Wiseman stated on Sacramento City Express, “We’re constantly looking for ways to enhance public safety and support our first responders with innovative tools.” He underlined that this approach will prioritize important elements like transparency and privacy while resulting in quicker response times, more accurate assessments, and increased community service.
According to the same statement on Sacramento City Express, Del Paso Heights was selected for the pilot because of its high call volume, crime trends, and location away from crowded airspaces, such as airports. Established in 2019, the SPD’s UAS Team consists of 24 qualified pilots who have flown more than 573 drones this year and performed more than 170 emergency responses.
