Ingozi, a 17-year-old male African lion who had been in the care of the Saint Louis Zoo since just after his first birthday, was humanely put down last Friday, the zoo announced.According to KSDK, Ingozi’s advanced liver and spinal disease—conditions that are frequently too severe to treat in senior lions—was the reason for his euthanasia.
Known for his powerful roar and his position as a proud mane event at the zoo, Ingozi was no stranger to the spotlight. A Facebook post that KMOX reported claimed that visitors could regularly see him relaxing and enjoying the sun from his preferred location on an elevated platform. His care was described as nothing less than exceptional by those working behind the scenes, which is a credit to the commitment of the zoo’s Animal Care and Animal Health departments.
Ingozi, who was born in 2007 at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, played a significant role in the Big Cat Country at the Saint Louis Zoo.He was coupled with a lioness named Cabara, and the two of them had several litters together, according to First Alert 4. Their offspring have dispersed throughout several zoos, guaranteeing the continuation of their genetic heritage.
After Ingozi’s death, Cabara, who is now 19 years old, is left as the only one carrying on their family’s legacy inside the Saint Louis Zoo. According to KSDK, the zoo has promised to give Cabara committed, specialized care while she stays at Big Cat Country. The zoo respects not only a life lost but also the worth of life left by giving careful consideration to an animal’s longevity and the care it received.
