Salt Lake City Police Department Welcomes 13 New Officers from Academy Class 171

The Salt Lake City Police Department has officially increased its ranks, graduating 13 new officers from Academy Class 171, as recently reported by

SLCPD

. Chief Mike Brown expressed pride in the new additions, acknowledging the evolving complexities of modern policing. “Over the years, our responsibilities as police officers have expanded, and the challenges we face have grown more complex, yet I know the graduates of Class 171 are well prepared to meet the expectations of our department and of our community,” he said in a statement.

The training these recruits have undergone spans nearly seven months, with a comprehensive curriculum designed to fully equip them for the multi-faceted nature of their role. According to

SLCPD

, their training included legal aspects, reality-based scenarios, defensive tactics, and more, preparing them to quickly learn the skills necessary for their new responsibilities. Starting their field training, they now partner up with Field Training Officers (FTOs) to find their footing in practical settings.

In line with the department’s Crime Control Plan, filling vacancies remains a key goal. Despite the addition of these new officers, the SLCPD still reports 35 unfilled positions, maintaining a vigilant search to balance the staffing levels as authorized by the city council. This year alone has seen the hiring of 63 new officers, and more are anticipated with the next academy class in January 2025, which is projected to include around 20 recruits.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s announcement also came paired with visuals from the graduation ceremony, releasing four photos for media use. As the department continues to eagerly work to strengthen its force, the community watches with anticipation to see how these officers will adapt to eventually fully integrate into their new roles in serving the city.
