San Antonio Unveils SATX Marathon for 2025 as Curtain Closes on Rock ‘n’ Roll Series

A new marathon is coming to San Antonio. According to MSN, officials declared on Monday that the SATX Marathon will replace the venerable Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series in 2025. According to a report by KSAT, the city and San Antonio Sports assert that the marathon is set to develop into a “major running event,” competing with prestigious events in Boston and New York. “We have built a strong marathon tradition over the years, and the new San Antonio Marathon will enhance the city’s stature with runners, helping solidify our race as a destination marathon,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg, expressing his excitement.

The Rock n’ Roll Running Series recently emailed participants to let them know that 2024 will be the last year the series will be held in San Antonio because the city has chosen to create its own event to keep the local running spirit alive. The inaugural event, which is scheduled for December 7, 2025, will have the theme “Every Step Tells A Story,” reflecting the city’s rich culture and history with miles designated as The Yanaguana Mile, The Fiesta Mile, The Military Mile, The Rodeo Mile, and The Culinary Mile. According to San Antonio Sports president and CEO Jenny Carnes, the SATX Marathon will provide a range of event lengths, from a 5K to a full marathon. They cited increased running participation, trail extensions, and community support as major factors in their decision to launch this new race.

The adjustment is been well received by local runners. A local runner named Chai Le admitted, “I am going to miss it,” in a statement that KSAT was able to receive. “This is a good thing,” said runner Tony Garcia, who also expressed his excitement for the new marathon. All of us are looking forward to the positive outcomes. The move to a locally run marathon is also being considered as the event aims to attract over 18,000 runners.

According to KSAT, runners still have the opportunity to participate in the Rock n Roll Running Series in San Antonio, which is scheduled for December 7-8. The series will include a half-marathon and marathon on Sunday, as well as a 5K and 10K on Saturday. City officials hope that the SATX Marathon would not only provide a race but also stimulate the city’s commerce, food, and culture. “Activate all of the culture, all of the restaurants, and all of the bars, while at the same time keeping all the money local in San Antonio” is what the marathon’s founder, Josh Furlow, stated as his objective.

The SATX Marathon registration is now open, and early sign-ups are encouraged with special rate promotions. The prices are $89 for the marathon, $79 for the half-marathon, and $39 for the 5K, so runners who want to reserve their place can do so. It is anticipated that comprehensive course details will be released early in the upcoming year.
