San Carlos Apache Tribe Members Eligible for Disaster Unemployment Assistance After Watch Fire

The San Carlos Apache Tribe has recently been approved for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) as a result of the Watch Fire incident this past July. The declaration, which comes after an October 4 presidential authorization, offers a financial lifeline to those tribal members whose jobs were swept away by the flames, according to the

Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES)

.

This federal aid will benefit those who found themselves jobless due to the disaster but doesn’t extend to individuals who are eligible for regular unemployment benefits. Under the FEMA-4833-DR declaration, a range of circumstances are catered for, including those who couldn’t start their new jobs because of the fire, those unable to get to work, or individuals who have taken on the role of head of household following a bereavement caused by the conflagration.

Beneficiaries can receive up to 38 weeks of DUA payments, backdated to the first payable week of July 14, continuing through to April 5, 2025, so long as their unemployment is still a direct consequence of the disaster. Just like regular Unemployment Insurance, these payments are calculated based on the previous year’s earnings.

Time is limited for San Carlos Apache Tribe members seeking assistance. While applications are accepted for up to 60 days after the disaster declaration, the deadline for initial applications is December 16. Applicants must provide proof of identity and employment or self-employment within 21 days of applying. Supporting documents, such as tax forms, pay stubs, or affidavits confirming work status at the time of the disaster, will be required.

Applications for DUA are open and can be filed online, or, for those unable to access the internet, through a dedicated phone line at the DUA Call Center. Detailed information about the documentation required and the application process itself can be found on
