San Diego Forecast: Rainy, Windy Weather with Mountain Snow Expected This Weekend

San Diegans, brace yourselves for a wet and windy start to the weekend.

NWS San Diego

forecasts periods of rain, mountain snow showers, and gusty westerly winds continuing into Saturday morning. The coast and Inland Empire can expect rainfall totals ranging from a few hundredths to a tenth inch. The San Diego County valleys and foothills could see up to 0.30 inches, while the mountains are anticipating 0.25 to 0.85 inches of precipitation.

In the lead-up to the weekend, snow levels are expected to tumble, dropping to between 4000 and 4500 ft by Saturday morning. The San Bernardino and Riverside County mountains could gather 1 to 3 inches of snow tonight, with certain southwest-facing slopes potentially receiving up to 4 inches,

NWS San Diego

said in an advisory. Meanwhile, up to an inch of snow might dust the San Diego County mountains into Saturday morning.

Amid the deluge, those with plans to sail or surf might want to reconsider. Strong northwest winds are forecasted to stir up the surf and create challenging conditions out in the water. Coastal areas could witness wind gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph early this morning, and although they’re expected to weaken by tonight, winds of up to 40 mph could still be a factor. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect through late Saturday morning, with higher-than-normal tides posing potential minor tidal overflow risks for low-lying beach spots.

According to

NWS San Diego

, Temperatures will remain cooler today and Saturday, dipping lower than average highs and lows. Coastal areas will see highs of 59 to 62 degrees and lows of 44 to 51 degrees, while the high desert will range from 52 to 57 degrees for daytime highs, dropping to 29 to 35 degrees for overnight lows. Relief from the wet and wild weather is on the horizon by Sunday, with drier conditions and warmer temperatures as a high-pressure system moves in.
