San Diego Launches Educational Partnerships for City Employees’ Skill Enhancement and Career Progress

The City of San Diego has announced a number of educational agreements that offer a variety of free and affordable educational options as part of its effort to support employee skill sets and career advancement. In line with its economic growth strategy, the City Council has authorized partnerships with four educational institutions to fulfill the workforce’s need for higher education as shown by a 2024 employee satisfaction survey, according to a recent release.

According to Christina Bibler, director of the Economic Development Department, the city created carefully chosen educational partnerships following a comprehensive survey that showed 48% of city workers were interested in pursuing higher education. In a statement to Inside San Diego, Bibler said, “We are fortunate to be able to offer these new educational partnerships to the City’s workforce through our Corporate Partnership Program.” These collaborations aim to advance comprehensive workforce development by offering discounts and scholarships, particularly with the National University, San Diego College of Continuing Education, University of California San Diego Division of Extended Studies, and UC San Diego Rady School of Management.

Julie Rasco of the Human Resources Department responded to the educational collaborations by emphasizing the city’s commitment to creating a culture of learning. Rasco told Inside San Diego that the City works to foster a culture of learning and to give all employees opportunities for professional advancement. Details of the program include a 25% tuition discount at National University for undergraduate degrees, along with significant perks from three new educational partners, such as five yearly fellowships at the Rady School of Management.

In a statement aired on Inside San Diego, Milliron said, “We are thrilled to collaborate with the city to establish avenues for these youngsters to further their education and employment. Additionally, Tina M. King, Ed.D., president of San Diego College of Continuing Education, expressed excitement about providing free educational courses to support city employees’ professional development.
