After a thorough search that started earlier this year, the Port of San Diego has announced Scott Chadwick as its new president and chief executive officer. As evidence of the difficulty and scope of the hiring process, Chadwick, who was leaving his position as Carlsbad’s city manager, was chosen from a pool of several hundred applicants.
The Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners Chairman Frank Urtasun expressed the Board’s satisfaction with the appointment, saying, “The Board and I are pleased to announce the selection of Scott Chadwick to lead the Port of San Diego into a people-focused future that reflects our commitment to deliver on our promises to our communities, our tenants, the residents of the state of California, and to all who visit our beautiful waterfront.” These remarks demonstrate the Board’s faith in Chadwick’s ability to lead. His tenure is scheduled to begin in January, and his ratification is anticipated at the Board meeting on December 10.
Twenty years of civic experience in a variety of departments and jobs are included in Chadwick’s resume. His military experience as an intelligence analyst in the U.S. Army for eight years, along with his previous roles as chief operations officer, director of human resources, and director of labor relations for the City of San Diego, have equipped him for this important leadership role. The role requires the capacity to manage numerous programs and initiatives that do not use taxpayer funds, as well as strategic insight.
In a statement released by the Port of San Diego, Chadwick expressed his excitement about his impending role, saying, “I could not be more thrilled for the opportunity to serve all who live, work, and play on and around the beautiful and vibrant San Diego Bay waterfront.” With an emphasis on the Port’s major initiatives, such as the Maritime Clean Air Strategy and the Port Master Plan Update, he underlined his willingness to interact with a range of stakeholders, including Commissioners, employees, renters, and community members.
The Port of San Diego was established in 1964 by the California government to regulate marine operations and waterfront land use. The city councils of Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City, and San Diego, among other cities under the Port’s jurisdiction, elect the seven-member Board of Port Commissioners, which makes decisions at the Port. The Port’s President and CEO, General Counsel, and Auditor carry out the Board’s duties of policy-making, enacting laws, and allocating funds.
