San Diego’s Brigantine Group Set to Acquire The Fish Market, Merging Seafood Dining Icons

The seafood dining scene in San Diego will undergo a dramatic change. The acquisition of The Fish Market by the Brigantine Restaurant Group, a mainstay of the neighborhood dining scene, will essentially combine two renowned seafood companies with a long history in Southern California’s culinary landscape. The Brigantine will expand its portfolio to include The Fish Market’s two San Diego locations. The Brigantine is well-known for its own seafood and oyster bars, among other dining ideas.

The Brigantine, Inc. president, Mike Morton Jr., made it clear that he intends to maintain The Fish Market brand’s illustrious history. “We definitely want to carry on The Fish Market brand,” he said in an interview with San Diego Style. The purchase is contingent upon the approval of the Port Commissioner and will be a major topic of discussion in the January meeting of the Port of San Diego. The Brigantine hopes to extend the lease at the North Harbor Drive property until its 2028 expiration date, and if the contract is approved, it may be finalized by mid-February of the following year.

The present Fish Market location’s close proximity to the closest Brigantine restaurant adds an intriguing aspect to the merging, which Morton says is not a problem. Morton clarified in the interview with San Diego Magazine that “[The Fish Market] can buy directly off commercial boats,” pointing out a significant distinction between the two businesses. Additionally, the Brigantine Group is already considering possible locations outside of California, including San Clemente, Nevada, Arizona, and Texas. These plans haven’t been finalized yet, though.

Since its original waterfront site opened in 1989, The Fish Market has gained recognition in the San Diego community. In an interview with San DiegoVille, Thomas Wilson, director of The Fish Market Restaurants Inc., said, “The decision to sell The Fish Market was not made lightly.” In line with Morton’s belief that the merger honors the common commitments and values of both companies, he voiced confidence in The Brigantine’s capacity to carry on The Fish Market’s tradition. Morton said, “The Fish Market’s reputation aligns perfectly with our mission of delivering memorable dining experiences,” according to the San Diego Villageport.
