San Fernando Valley Man Sentenced to 15 Months for Threats to Bomb FBI’s Los Angeles Office

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California, Mark William Anten, a man from the San Fernando Valley, was sentenced to 15 months in jail for mentioning the “Unabomber” and threatening to blow the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office. Anten, 53, of Sun Valley, was sentenced to jail after a three-day trial in which he was found guilty on two charges of making threats via interstate communication.

Anten escalated his threats in a series of emails he wrote to FBI agents between July and December 2023. FBI task force officials asked him to stop communicating, but he persisted in his dangerous behavior, sending harsh emails that threatened violence and mentioned tools for damage. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California, Anten wrote in an email on December 5, 2023, “I AM THE UNABOMBER” and “I WILL UNABOMB THE LOS ANGELES FBI HQ.” The following day, he claimed that he could go on a mass murder spree, stating that such actions would be justified in response to the agent’s actions.

“Federal agents deserve our appreciation for risking their lives to enforce the law and protect our community,” said U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada, who praised federal law enforcement, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Anten’s actions were deemed inappropriate by FBI Los Angeles Field Office Assistant Director in Charge Akil Davis, who affirmed that threats of violence are unacceptable and that there are more polite methods to express disagreement with the government.

Assistant United States Attorneys Clifford D. Mpare of the General Crimes Section and Kedar S. Bhatia of the Terrorism and Export Crimes Section prosecuted Anten after the FBI investigated her threats.
