Earlier this year, a man from San Francisco led police on a fast-paced pursuit after carjacking an Uber driver. He was convicted guilty. The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office posted on social media that 48-year-old Jason Gresham was found guilty of a number of offenses, including carjacking, eluding a police officer, and giving false information to authorities. The victim was waiting to pick up a passenger at Fisherman’s Wharf on January 21 when Mr. Gresham approached him. After demanding a ride and threatening the driver with a pointed, shiny object, he finally ejected the victim from the vehicle. He took control of the car and led the San Francisco Police and later the California Highway Patrol on a chase that began in San Francisco, crossed the Bay Bridge, and finished in Vallejo. Gresham fled at up to 90 miles per hour in spite of efforts to stop him until he was caught by police in a dead-end parking lot.
DA Brooke Jenkins commended the jury and stressed the importance of law enforcement agencies working together to handle cases like this one, according to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. “My office will do everything we can to ensure there is justice in each case and will work with law enforcement agencies at all levels and across county lines to protect the safety of the public,” Jenkins stated.
The verdict of the trial, according to Assistant District Attorney Adams, “conveys that intoxication is not an excuse for criminal behavior.” During the trial, Adams commends the victim for his bravery in confronting his attacker. Mr. Gresham is still being held pending a bench trial on aggravating circumstances on December 4 and sentencing.
