A man from San Leon was given a 40-year sentence for killing his ex-girlfriend Mary Elizabeth Hyman in an April 2021 incident. According to Click2Houston, William Glenn Herron, 57, was sentenced on October 11 following a jury conviction. According to the same source, Herron decided to let the court decide how to punish him, which led to the 40-year sentence that was handed down yesterday.
After a disturbance at Hyman’s trailer was reported one day in April of last year, the case came to a head. But a Galveston County sheriff’s deputy who responded left without seeing any indications of disturbance. Herron himself called 911 the very next day, saying he thought Hyman had passed away. After an inquiry that resulted in Herron’s indictment in August 2021, deputies discovered her body with serious blunt force damage and signs of a violent confrontation. In August of that year, Herron was charged with murder, according to FOX26 Houston.
The prosecution used video security footage and text messages throughout the trial to imply that Herron had been following Hyman in the days before her death. A chronology of the deadly incident was given by this evidence. Herron’s defense, on the other hand, suggested that Hyman’s injuries were the consequence of unintentional falls or an unidentified attacker. After just over an hour of deliberation, the jury found the defendant guilty.
Chief prosecutor Whitney Rasberry highlighted the seriousness of the crime at the end of the trial, saying, “He beat her to death and discarded her like a piece of trash.” Click2Houston was the one that communicated this. Herron received a 40-year sentence in spite of the prosecution’s plea for a life sentence.
