The fire department has taken a major step to improve its emergency response capabilities as the City of San Luis deals with the problems posed by its expanding population. The San Luis Fire Department responded to the community’s need for advanced medical support by enrolling eight of its firefighters in the Arizona Western Entrepreneurial College’s Paramedic Academy in an attempt to handle an increase in emergencies.
Along with their continued responsibilities as first responders, these firemen dedicated themselves to a rigorous ten-month program that included at least 200 clinical hours and over 960 lecture hours. However, their commitment was unabated by the harmony between education and service, as they balanced demanding coursework with front-line labor in an unceasing demonstration of community duty.
On October 28, 2024, all eight firefighters received their formal academy graduation, marking the culmination of their hard work.Beatrice Ortiz, Rhiordan Pope, Mitchell Grew, Eric Sanchez, Mark Rivera Jr., Salvador Estrada, Martin Pi on, and Victor Navarrete are the graduates, according to the City of San Luis. These recently licensed paramedics have greatly improved the fire department’s capacity to respond to medical emergencies.
This accomplishment comes at a critical juncture for San Luis, a growing community with increasing demand for emergency medical services. The recently graduated paramedics are prepared to combine their medical knowledge and firefighting skills in a dual position that may help save more lives. According to the statement released by the city, “These additional firefighters who are certified as paramedics will enhance the City of San Luis Fire Department’s ability to continue providing critical and needed service.”
