A proactive patrol stop earlier this week resulted in a San Mateo couple being arrested for selling drugs, which has legal repercussions. Officers on South Norfolk Street flagged a car for an equipment violation on Sunday, according to the San Mateo Police Department.
Officers interacted with the driver, Jose Lopez-Lopez, and the passenger, Norma Herrera, during the stop. Officers found a variety of drugs and associated paraphernalia after Lopez-Lopez gave them permission to examine his vehicle. A digital scale, many plastic baggies, and a sizeable amount of cash ($8,723) were also seized from the vehicle.
When 18.9 grams of cocaine and 0.9 grams of methamphetamine were found during the ensuing search, authorities concluded that the pair was engaged in drug sales. Both Lopez-Lopez and Herrera were arrested on similar charges after the investigation’s findings triggered a call to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
The 47-year-old San Francisco resident Norma Herrera is accused with possessing drugs with the intent to sell. Jose Lopez-Lopez, a 35-year-old resident of San Francisco, is also charged with possessing a controlled substance with the intent to sell. Since the cash and other items that were seized are now being used as evidence in the current prosecution, both are facing significant legal obstacles.
