Santa Monica Officer Survives Knife Attack, Assailant Shot Dead Outside Police Headquarters

According to freshly released bodycam footage, a guy brandishing a knife viciously assaulted a Santa Monica police officer in front of the police station on October 5. The officer shot and killed the attacker at the end of the altercation.

The incident started when the suspect, Deyaa Abdelhadi Halaibeh, a 28-year-old New Yorker, attacked a staff member and took a set of knives from a nearby Target shop. A short while later, he was captured on camera heading toward police headquarters, where he pressed the call button at the front door to ask to speak with an officer. During the subsequent interaction with Officer Halaibeh, he was asked, “What’s in your jacket? With your hand in your jacket like that, I’m a little uneasy,” the ABC7 said.

Halaibeh responded to the officer’s expressed concern by saying, “You’re nervous?” before lunging and attacking him with a purple 8-inch Cuisinart blade, the Target knife that was stolen. KTLA described the escalation, stating that Halaibeh was shot by the officer as he continued his attack despite being thrown to the ground after being briefly repelled. The officer’s neck and shoulder were severely stabbed several times.

According to CBS News Los Angeles, the cop was treated and discharged from the hospital the next day. However, after paramedics from the Santa Monica Fire Department failed to provide life-saving efforts, the suspect was declared dead at the site.

According to ABC7, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is still looking into the event.
