Sawtelle Tempura House Closes Its Doors After 75 Years of Serving Local Community in Los Angeles

After serving the community for three-quarters of a century, the iconic Sawtelle Tempura House has shut its doors permanently. According to an Eater LA report, the closure came on October 29, 2024. The small, cherished Japanese bento establishment had been a fixture in Sawtelle since 1949, enduring changes in ownership, evolving tastes, and the relentless tides of urban development.

In a heartfelt farewell message on social media, the Sawtelle Tempura House team expressed their gratitude: “After 5 unforgettable years, we’ve officially closed the doors of Sawtelle Tempura House. Words can’t express how grateful we are for the support, laughter, and memories shared with each of you. Thank you for making Sawtelle Tempura House a special place in our community.” The message concluded with a note of optimism for the patrons’ futures, “We’ll miss you all so much and, we hope wellness, happiness, and bright days fill your lives ahead.” This announcement was shared through the restaurant’s Instagram page, accompanied by a simple post that attracted an outpouring of comments from disheartened regulars.

The beloved eatery was renowned for its takeout bento boxes, which featured a variety of proteins such as salmon teriyaki, pork cutlet, and thinly sliced pork belly. Each was meticulously prepared and served with steamed rice and salad.

Details surrounding the closure point to circumstances beyond mere economics or competition. “The landlord sold the property to a developer, and the owner was ready to retire. The confluence of the two factors made it feel like a ‘natural transition point,’ ” a representative said in a statement to Eater LA.
