Seattle City Council Adopts 2025-2026 Budget with Focus on Safety, Housing, and Human Services

The 2025–2026 Biennial Budget was approved by the Seattle City Council, with a strong focus on human services, affordable housing, and public safety. District 5 Councilmember Cathy Moore outlined a number of important budgetary provisions for her district with the goal of addressing issues including homelessness and public safety.

A news release states that Moore obtained “$1.9 million for the Low-Income Housing Fund” annually for 2025 and 2026, in addition to “$3.3 million for rental assistance” and “$3.4 million for homeownership capital production program.”

According to the Seattle City Council, the council member supported financing for “the creation of a seasonal winter shelter” and “non-congregate shelters” in an attempt to directly address the homelessness epidemic. These initiatives are expected to get several million dollars over the course of two years.

The construction of North Seattle’s first community safety hub and investments in more CCTV cameras along Aurora Avenue North are further measures taken to ensure the safety of District 5 residents. According to the Seattle City Council, the plan to enact a “local 2% capital gains excise tax” in order to raise additional funds was resisted, and the measure was guaranteed to be reviewed in early 2025.
