Second Fatal Crash in Two Days on Highway 57 Woman Killed in Head-on Collision Near Batesville

ZAVALA COUNTY, Texas (DDN) – The woman who died in a head-on crash on Highway 57 on Wednesday morning has been recognized by the Department of Public Safety.

Carmen Ruiz, 50, was traveling on Highway 57 about five miles east of Batesville at mile marker 426 in Zavala County around 5:30 a.m., according to DPS.

Ruiz crossed the wrong side of the highway for unexplained reasons and collided head-on with a Peterbilt truck tractor semi-trailer.

Ruiz perished on the scene.

The incident closed Highway 57 for several hours, forcing motorists to take alternate routes throughout the morning.

Wednesday’s crash was the second fatal one on Highway 57 this week.

The Uvalde County Constable’s Precinct 6 Office reported early Tuesday morning that five individuals were killed in a serious automobile accident caused by icy road conditions.

According to DPS, a Ford F-150 pickup truck was halted on the Nueces River Bridge due to a collision involving two Ford vans.

Multiple passengers in the vans attempted to notify the driver of a Freightliner tractor-truck to halt due to ice on the bridge, according to DPS. However, investigators stated that the Freightliner truck driver collided with all three automobiles.

Three people inside one of the Ford vans, Pedro Urquiza (63), Estanislao Jaimes (60), and Diana Lopez (43), were pronounced dead on the spot, according to the DPS.

According to authorities, Jose Artemio Rodriguez, 48, the driver of the Ford pickup truck, was also pronounced dead after being discovered at the bottom of the bridge.

According to DPS, the driver of the other Ford van, Maria Pineda, 60, died as a result of injuries sustained in the incident with the Freightliner tractor truck.

Seven additional passengers were sent to a hospital for further treatment.
