Seven ORNL Scientists Honored with Prestigious Battelle Distinguished Inventor Title for Pioneering Innovations

The designation of Battelle Distinguished Inventors, which is granted to individuals who have at least 14 U.S. patents, has been earned by seven scientists at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The honor acknowledges their role in advancing inventions from the idea stage to the commercial market, increasing their influence on society. This accomplishment, according to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, isn’t only about lab innovation; it also involves tactics ranging from sophisticated manufacturing to battery development, all of which are essential to the facility’s purpose.

Susan Hubbard, deputy for science and technology at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, praised the inventors, saying, “These innovators have not only developed cutting-edge technologies, but they have also prioritized taking the steps to move them out into the marketplace, which is critical for adoption and broad impact.” The recognized innovators have a variety of specialties. The team includes Jianlin Li, who focuses on improving battery energy storage, and Amy Elliott, who is renowned for her advancements in 3D printing that can be applied to a variety of industries. Brian Post’s extensive 3D printing projects include the world’s first 3D printed car, submarines, wind turbine blade molds, and a full-scale house, while James E. Parks II, another awardee, is leading the way in engine optimization and emission management.

Tomonori Saito, a 2023 Battelle Inventor of the Year whose work on polymers predicts advancements in plastic waste upcycling and sustainable materials creation, is also on the list of researchers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This cadre also includes Costas Tsouris and Gabriel Veith, whose materials chemistry is crucial for energy conversion and enhancing battery performance, while Tsouris’ chemical methods are crucial for carbon capture. To recognize their achievements to science and technology, the etched portraits of each new honoree will be displayed on the walls of Battelle headquarters and the ORNL.
