When firefighters arrived, they found flames shooting from a first-floor window. The Battle Creek Fire Department quickly used hoses to fight the fire. The house, located near the intersection of Penn Street, became the focus of rescue and containment efforts. Sadly, six pets—three dogs and three cats—did not survive the fire.
