SLCPD Invokes OICI Protocol After Death of Man in Salt Lake City, Officers on Administrative Leave Pending Investigation

As required by Utah state law, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) has activated the officer-involved-critical-incident (OICI) protocol in response to the death of a 50-year-old man on Thursday. The incident started when SLC911 received a report of a naked, confused guy searching through trash near 800 South 700 East, according to SLCPD.

Officers and social workers from the SLCPD responded to the site swiftly but cautiously when SLC911 received new information that the person was visibly shaking. The cops’ body-worn camera footage showed that the man was conscious but not alert when they arrived at the scene. Police Chief Mike Brown praised his officers for their compassionate handling of the situation, giving the man clothing and blankets before paramedics arrived, citing the incident’s preliminary investigation.

There were no reports of the officers physically interacting with the man or using lethal force. Officers handcuffed the man as they awaited medical aid because he tried to stand and refused to be seated for his safety and the sake of the continuing inquiry. The victim was then taken by Gold Cross Ambulance to the hospital, where he died in spite of emergency protocols. Until the medical examiner examines the case, the exact cause of death is unknown.
