The Colorado Avalanche defeated the struggling Detroit Red Wings 2-1 on Saturday night, with Valeri Nichushkin scoring his third goal in two games and Alexandar Georgiev recording 28 saves.
Colorado’s power play was scored by Cale Makar. With 35 points (nine goals, 26 assists) in 28 games, Makar leads all NHL defensemen.
Detroit had dropped five in a row, all by a single goal, and Lucas Raymond scored his eighth goal in the previous nine games. 23 saves were made by Ville Husso.
Avalanche: Georgiev, the team’s best goalie, put on a spectacular comeback. After giving up four goals in less than 12 minutes, he was substituted out of his previous start on Tuesday against Buffalo.
Red Wings: Despite playing some of the league’s worst defenses, the offense is still a complete failure. The Avalanche have lost four of their last six games and given up 27 goals.
Makar made effective use of the Avalanche’s lone power play. Early in the second period, he ripped a shot from the point that went past a Husso who was screened. As a result, the Colorado lead remained intact and the offensively struggling Red Wings fell behind two goals.
Makar has scored 17 points in eight games versus the Red Wings, including his first career hat trick against Detroit in March.
The Red Wings play in Buffalo on Monday, and the Avalanche go to New Jersey on Sunday.
