Road conditions were impacted by the season’s first snowfall Thursday morning, causing delays for drivers throughout Wisconsin. In Southeast Wisconsin, there were numerous collisions and road closures due to heavy, wet snow, according to WISN. Due to an accident, eastbound lanes were blocked on I-94 at freeway 26 in Concord, and both sides of the freeway were covered in snow.

Near I-43 and Wisconsin Avenue, two semi-trucks jackknifed, limiting traffic to one lane and creating major delays. In order to avoid the traffic, commuters took detours along side streets like Wisconsin and 11th. Travel was further disrupted by over 125 reported crashes in Waukesha County. WISN reported that, in contrast to the typical 8-minute commute, “traffic from Glendale to downtown is taking 38 minutes on I-43 southbound.”

Snow ended by the afternoon and turned to rain and drizzle in Milwaukee and the neighboring suburbs. Conditions for drivers were difficult as the snow turned to slush. Heavy snow bands caused higher-than-expected snow totals in areas like southeast Wisconsin. Visit the CBS58 website to view the final snow totals.

Two to four inches of snow were predicted for Milwaukee, especially in the sections furthest from Lake Michigan. According to Milwaukee-Sullivan National Weather Service meteorologist Marcia Cronce, “There is an area of intense snowfall, and it is winding down the eastern half of the state.” A winter weather advisory and wind advisories warning of gusts up to 45 mph were in force throughout the day, and authorities urged citizens to exercise caution. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel predicted that by the afternoon, the snow will give way to cooler rain that would last until the evening.
