Snow, frigid conditions in Michigan for Thanksgiving weekend. Here’s what to expect.

(CBS DETROIT)With Thanksgiving approaching, many people in Michigan are ready to travel or take to the skies. For those who choose to remain in-state, the prospect of snow and extremely cold temperatures over the holiday weekend is a concern.

The Michigan lake-effect snow belts will have to deal with snow showers this time. Metro Detroit experiences lows below freezing on Wednesday night as cooler air surges in.

Our lake-effect snow activity off of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior will begin as winds gradually move to the northwest.

The eastern Upper Peninsula, the shoreline of Lake Michigan, and the more interior areas around Cadillac are experiencing the most snowfall, according to the National Weather Service in Marquette.

Anticipate a few flakes in the air and possibly even a small amount on grassy or elevated surfaces during the weekend, when the lake-effect snow showers will be able to spread throughout the state.

Black Friday temperatures will plummet into the 20s by Thanksgiving evening.

Throughout the state, highs into the weekend will be in the mid 30s, below freezing, but the wind chill will be the main problem. Beginning on Thanksgiving morning, wind chills will be in the 20s during the day and dip into the teens by Friday, so anyone organizing outdoor celebrations should prepare accordingly.

While mixed precipitation persists in the northeast, air travel over the next 24 hours will primarily concentrate on drier conditions in the central U.S.

Expect showers along the West Coast and a mix in the Pacific Northwest if you’re traveling west. Snowfall will also persist in the Rockies.
