Following some rain and snow showers at the end of 2024, we are anticipating lower temperatures and the possibility of some winter weather to usher in the New Year.
Now that our low pressure system from Tuesday has passed to the east, a northwesterly flow will sweep into the region to begin the new year.
This will bring cooler air into the region, with the possibility of snow showers and/or a few flurries from Wednesday to Friday. High temperatures will reach the 30s on Wednesday and Thursday before dropping to the upper 20s by Friday.
We will keep the cloud cover in the forecast for next weekend. High temperatures remain below freezing as we approach the first weekend of the new year. High temperatures will reach the upper 20s on Saturday.
Then we’re keeping an eye on the end of the weekend and early next week. The Climate Prediction Center has placed the region at risk of significantly below-average temperatures as well as the possibility of substantial snowfall by the end of the weekend and early next week.
According to the data as of Wednesday morning, a winter storm could approach into the region at the start of next week when the kids return to school, although it is expected to proceed a bit further south, where we would experience the fringe effects.
Right now, an area of low pressure appears to be developing and moving across the Midwest and Ohio Valley. Where this tracks will dictate the types of winter weather we get throughout the region. We are adding a chance of snow to the forecast starting next week, with high temperatures remaining in the 20s.
We will keep the cloud cover in the forecast for next Tuesday. Next Tuesday is likely to be mostly overcast with highs in the mid-upper 20s.
Beyond the Future4Cast, we will continue to forecast below-average temperatures for the first half of January, as the Climate Prediction Center has maintained a trend of well-below-average temperatures through the middle of the month. It appears that we will have a persistent spell of winter-like weather beginning in 2025.
