Snowstorm Causes Multi-Vehicle Crash on NYS Thruway, Closes I-90 Near Herkimer

LITTLE FALLS, New York (DDN) – A part of the New York State Thruway is shut down due to a multi-vehicle crash close to Herkimer.

The NYS Thruway Authority reported at 12:12 p.m. Monday that all lanes are closed in both directions on I-90 between exits 29A (Little Falls) and 30 (Herkimer) because of a crash. A photo from WKTV captured at least twelve cars and two tractor-trailers involved in the incident.

WKTV reported that the accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Monday. Emergency vehicles, including ambulances, police cars, tow trucks, and snow plows, were seen at the location; it remains uncertain whether any drivers or passengers sustained injuries.

“Due to whiteout conditions and treacherous travel conditions, drivers should avoid this area until further notice,” the NYS Thruway Authority said. “Drivers should use caution while traveling and avoid all unnecessary travel.”

At 1 p.m., traffic camera footage revealed that vehicles were being redirected from exits 29A and 30 in both directions on the highway.

As of 1:23 p.m., New York State Police reported that I-90 is still closed between exits 29A and 30 because of the winter weather conditions.

“WHITEOUT CONDITIONS are being reported throughout Central New York and the Mohawk Valley,” state troopers said. “Avoid all unnecessary travel and drive with caution.”

Herkimer County is experiencing a snow emergency that will last until 7 p.m. on Monday, as reported by the county office of emergency services. The county has declared a state of emergency, prohibiting all non-essential travel.
